Port Report - Cr Jim Mason - 1 July 2019

Hello everyone, just a quick note from me since my last update here in April.

Further action on cats

Managing cat numbers is an ongoing challenge for not only Greater Geelong but councils across Australia, as feral cats have a devastating effect on birds and native wildlife nationwide.

That’s why the City continuously works with a number of agencies on what is a state and national issue.

Council has been liaising with businesses and individuals in the Portarlington shopping centre area over the past six months, as part of efforts to deal with feral cats there.

Over this period of time, more than 20 feral cats have been removed from the area by officers.

Another cat trapping program is underway in the area as a result of a petition from community members at a June council meeting.

For the fifth year, we’re also offering discounted cat desexing in July to tackle the problem of unwanted kittens and cats.

Head to www.geelongaustralia.com.au for participating clinics.

St Leonards revamp

I’m proud to report stage one of streetscape works in the St Leonards main shopping precinct have finished.

Council spent $40,000 to improve drainage, seal a gravel parking area and build a new kerb on the north side of Murradoc Road, west of Blanche Street.

But we’re not done yet!

A $400,000 allocation from our 2019-20 Budget will go towards stage two, which will focus on new street furniture and garden beds, and pedestrian crossing works from The Esplanade past the shopping precinct.
