Leopold Local column by Cr Jim Mason – due 26 June 2020

Despite the easing of some restrictions being put on hold recently, due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, it’s been fantastic to see community, sport and hobby groups restarting in Leopold.

Guided by statewide directions, the City’s helped these groups develop a COVID Safe Work plan to safely operate in council-owned facilities.

For example, the Leopold Community Hub is back open to restricted numbers. Seating is 1.5 metres apart, hand sanitiser is available and community members are asked to bring their own mug if they want a cuppa.

These are definitely strange times but these measures will allow for locals to reconnect safely.

Redeployed Bellarine Aquatic & Sports Centre gym trainers and exercise instructors are also back in their roles, after City-owned gyms and sport and recreation stadiums reopened in July.

Strict hygiene and safety practices are also in place there to protect staff and patrons.

For an update on facilities and safety measures, head to www.geelongaustralia.com.au/covid19/ for more information.

There you’ll also find a range of council support measures for residents, community groups, businesses, the arts sector and more.

Council’s committed to helping the community through the pandemic and this funding will go towards easing some of those challenges.

Finally, I want to let you know that the Leopold Lakers Basketball Club has received a $1,954 grant to buy some much-needed equipment.

The Lakers are working towards returning for a shortened winter season, news of which I’m sure has put a spring in the step of their dedicated players!

Keep an eye out on the team’s Facebook page for info on how the season will work.

The grant was part of $304,698 in funding awarded to groups from across the region in round two of council’s 2019-20 Community Grants program. This program has now distributed a total of more than $4 million.

The 2020-21 Budget has now been finalised, which will see more funding and projects on the cards for the Bellarine!
